Thanks for this, great to finally catch up with what happened to Emily after I lost track of them in the late 80s.

In 1986, when they still went by "See Emily Play", I booked them to open for my band, in our local pub in Chirk, N.Wales, having seen them a couple of times in Wrexham and Ruthin, and being in touch with Mark Williams through his fanzines. If I remember correctly, that was Mark's first gig on bass, and they had a new drummer - Gruff Rhys? They were fantastic, though most of the crowd didn't seem to think so, and I got kicked out of my band after the gig for telling everyone that Emily were far better than us.

Great to hear these later tracks, especially the Rub-Al-Khali album, which I've never come across before.

Thanks again,

Splendid. I'm off to get my copy to replace lost or never gotten but should've vinyl. I have fond memories of hearing Last Party soundchecking with cover of Cruiser's Creek at The King & Queen to an audience of one (me). The geographical thing always fascinated me. Vic Godard being from the same area. And the figure of Robert Lloyd (yet another postman in pop) figures somewhere in here I would suggest.

Nice one Dan. There was an interesting PS when Cliffe itself became briefly famous when there were proposals to build an airport in the area, threatening a lot of wildlife, and the RSPB led a high profile campaign against this which if I remember rightly was co-ordinated by Perry Haines who many years earlier had been involved with starting i-D, dressed Duran Duran, recorded a great single for Fetish, managed King. Speaking of King, I can probably claim to be the first person to tell Reggie King at length about how great The Claim were. I did have a secret plan to unite the two but somehow it never came to pass ...

I was a friend of Gian Binelli's many years ago, but I lost touch - I was trying to get back in touch when I found these references to his death. I'm shocked and saddened by this news - could anyone tell me what happened?

Great narrative summary of the band's musical journey. Well done, and bravo.

I was unable to find the "Record Collector" article, but I'd love to read it if you've got an electronic copy.

Now I'm off to discover Elbow, Heligoland, and Out of Season.
